Frogs In A Pot Slowly Coming To A Boil

It is apocryphal but a great story nonetheless, frogs in a pot of water slowing coming to a boil who don't have the sense to jump out of the pot before they cooked.  I've used this story before, but now we have a real version of it happening right now in Chesapeake Bay.

After President Donald Trump watched a story aired on CNN — a network he says he never watches — which detailed the devastating impact climate change has had on a small island in the Chesapeake Bay, he called the mayor of the island to inform him that everything would be just fine.
Virginia’s Tangier Island is shrinking at a rate of 15 feet each year, the Washington Post noted, and the Army Corps of Engineers has said the cause is from “coastal erosion and rising sea levels.” But that wasn’t enough to convince the president, or even the island’s Mayor James Eskridge.
“Donald Trump, if you see this, whatever you can do, we welcome any help you can give us,” Eskridge told CNN. “I love Trump as much as any family member I got.”
Eskridge got his wish, and the president gave him a call.
“He said we shouldn’t worry about rising sea levels,” Eskridge told the Post. “He said that ‘your island has been there for hundreds of years, and I believe your island will be there for hundreds more.”
 Scientists have said the island’s 450 residents, who overwhelmingly supported Trump in the November election, may need to completely abandon the island in the next few decades.

 Of course they're not the only ones ignoring the consequences of global warming.   Scientists have been warning about rising sea levels for some time.  Anyone ignoring their evidence is a frog in a pot slowly coming to a boil.

I went to a presentation at the University of Washington by Professor Raftery of the Statistics and Sociology Departments of a recent paper of his and colleagues (Alec Zimmer, Dargan M.W. Frierson, Richard Startz, and Peiran Liu) in the Journal Nature, entitled Less than 2 °C warming by 2100 unlikely   (link behind a paywall) . Their paper is a response to a need to provide a statistical forecast for global temperatures.  What the IPCC has previously provided are "scenarios" based on "expert" thinking.  Raftery has previously developed statistical methods for estimating world-wide migration patterns that has been adopted by the United Nations.  At the presentation he presented a statistical model for forecasting global temperatures. Their result is a 90% interval forecast of 2 to 4.9 degrees Centigrade with a median of 3.2 degrees.
